Drawing 440: Final Project

Image
For our Final project we were challenged to to create a a concept piece with the subject matter being our choice. To add an extra level of difficulty the size of our paper was required to be no smaller than 3ftx3ft. The thought of creating a drawing at this scale was a little daunting at first, as I typically do not create very large pieces of work, due to the fact that I enjoy creating very intricate detailed work. Per usual trying to come up with what I wanted to draw took a little longer than I would have liked. At this point in the semester I was feeling pretty exhausted and dead and was just looking forward to enjoying a weekend at Derby that was quickly approaching. I decided to kind of run with this idea. I typically like to create kind of creepy pieces of art, so I thought like a "dead Derby" concept could be cool. At first I looked to inspiration from Derby murals that I've seen all my life in Louisville. I had originally thought of doing a scene with multiple el

War & Peace

Image
This project was titled War & Peace. We were instructed to create a device that implemented war or peace. However, we were not supposed to actually draw the object, instead draw the plans for the object. Like a blueprint. We we also limited to a certain amount of materials, basically ones that would've been used in the time of DaVinci. Our goal was to make this piece of art look very old. To get the process rolling the whole class started out by tea staining paper. By soaking our paper in tea/coffee for a few minutes at a time this created a weathered effect giving it the appearance of it being old. I struggled a little bit coming up with what device I wanted to create. I knew I wanted to create a device of war, but I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do. I am pretty into science fiction and weird creepy stuff so making a device of war sounded right. I recently just finished the Game of Thrones series so my mind kept going back to dragons and weird magic. At first I contem

Drawing440: Text Project

Image
For this Project the objective was to create a drawing using text as the driving point for our finished piece of work. We were shown some examples or artists work, but one artist that stuck out to me was Ed Ruscha. We watched a video about him, and how he created art and I found him to be very interesting and a genius. One part of the video that stuck out in my mind was when he was creating text out of unconventional materials. He used materials like ketchup, chocolate, chewing tobacco, the list goes on. I liked this idea of creating text that was not just ink, or something that had been seen again and again. That's when I decided "I think I want to make my words out of smoke/ fire".Now that I had what material I wanted to use down, I had to come up with some text. This was a little bit of a struggle for me because I'm not typically a huge text fan, I prefer more imagery. One day in class I started thinking about dogs and how awesome they are...and then I wrote down t

Drawing 440: 100 Drawings

Image
For this assignment we had to complete 100 small drawings. When I heard this announcement I all but had a heart attack, knowing how I struggled with completing the 50 small drawings last semester. For these small 100 drawings you could pretty much draw whatever you were interested in, as long as there was some method behind the madness that was being created. Some of my classmates chose a certain theme, some chose a specific material. I chose to stick with a nature theme. Over my time being an artist I have discovered that I really do not in anyway enjoy drawing humans, faces, bodies, etc. I do however love drawing/ painting landscapes, objects in nature, animals etc. So this is what I chose to do. When I was doing my ink pen drawing, one component included an alligator. This alligator was the bomb.com and I loved  working on it. From studying how its scales moved with it's body, to discovering all the different textures that this creature had on it. In a way I became texture obses

Ink Drawing Drawing 440

My last blog post on this assignment was an "in progress" post. Unfortunately I guess this one is as well. Although I worked on this piece tirelessly since the last time I posted, I was unable to completely finish it. There is no one to blame but myself and yes I am very disappointed.  I am trying as best as I can to manage all of my classes and work and projects, but ultimately it feels like I'm drowning in work and can't stay on top. I've really got to figure something out soon, because I know my grades are going to begin to suffer, much like my sleep and health already have. There is no worse feeling than turning in an uncompleted piece, especially when you know your professor expects more out of you. I wish I was the kind of person that could BS a project and be okay turning it in that way, but I simply can't. This is why I often underestimate how much time I really need. Although I did not finish this project, there are still many things I am proud of. My

Drawing 440: In Progress Ink Drawing

As this semester rolled around, I was optimistic that I would have achieve success as I had the past semester. However, although this semester is just starting to get into the swing of things, it's proving to be my hardest semester yet. My hardest class last semester undoubtedly was drawing 341. It was also my favorite class. This semester I am taking drawing 440, which is similar in a sense but a little more challenging. My favorite project of all time last semester was the ink pen drawing. This semester I am doing that assignment again, however, I am doing it twice the size of last time. As I said previously this is proving to be my hardest semester I've had to date, and I am really struggling with time management (even more so than normal, which I didn't know was possible). Which is why I am not as far along in this project as I should be. When I started my second ink pen drawing I was having a difficult time coming up with a composition, and figuring out what I wanted t

Book Project

Image
For the last project of the semester we were to create a Book (illustrations, binding, and all) on any topic of our choice. I have always have a massive interest in Greek mythology (like i'm actually pretty nerdy about it) so thats what I decided I wanted my book to be on. I was very excited to do this project and had big aspirations for what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted the illustrations to be of gods and goddesses, in the style of Alphonse Mucha (he's my fav). I did a lot of research for this project at the beginning, trying to decided what gods and goddesses I wanted to incorporate into my book, and that would be the deciding factor or how many pages I included. Once I got an idea of who I wanted to include, I started doing research on each individual character. I knew most stories/ characteristics about each of the gods and goddesses, but was not quite sure if any had any nailed down physical traits. This was a big reason I wanted to do these characters, to kind
